Age of Empires Online launches August 16th developed by Robot Entertainment & Gas Powered Games. Many Ensemblites were involved in the process while the game was in production at Robot. From my hands on experience with the game, I can confirm this excellent title lives up to the quality of Ensemble Studios developed games in the series before it.
See you online August 16th!

Age & Orcs Must Die updates and some information about Zynga acquisitions
Ok, so its been a while since the last update! Apologies for that! So what’s been happening lately? First off, the beta testing for Age of Empires Online has come to end. Microsoft and Gas Powered are now wrapping up the game with final touches before launching this August 16th. It wont be long now until eager Age fans get to play the next great game in the Age series which has sold over 20 million copies under Ensemble Studios. Luckily the bulk of the work on Age of Empires Online has come from prestigious ex Ensemblers at Robot Entertainment.
While Microsoft is busy getting things ready for launch, Rogan Knight is also busy stopping by as many community people as possible before finally arriving at Robot Entertainment HQ. Fans may remember back in February of this year, avid forum-goer RadioKenny came up with the fantastic idea of sending a figurine of a knight to various Age fans around the world before ending up at Robot Entertainment when the game launches. Originally, notes were included for the developers to read but unfortunately some of these have been lost. A map has been made available detailing Rogan‘s destinations around the road so far. These include Hurst Castle in the UK with Remember ES along with Spain, Italy, The Netherlands and some states in the US. Check out the map of the Journey of Rogan Knight here:

In other exciting news for the Age of Empires Community, many will remember the iconic MrMilo. The legendary community member was once part of Ensemble Studios where he posted numerous guides for players of all skill levels to improve their strategy skills. The highly competitive MrMilo also took part in numerous community games. MrMilo exited Ensemble a few months before the studios official closure. As of today, Microsoft Studios have announced that MrMilo will be returning to the Age Community to work on the balance team at Age of Empires Online. The return was announced by Ryz0n on the official Age Community website:
Age of Empires 3 has seen several different administrations over the years and those with a blue name are rarely forgotten. MrMilo is one of the original moderators for AOE3, and quickly became a household name within the AOE community. To this day I hear stories about his guides within the community, how he’s helped others, and vignettes from people who have played with or against him. For Age of Empires Online, I am pleased to announce that MrMilo is joining us to work on the balance team here at MGS! Our balance team works both internally, as well as with Gas Powered Games, to make certain civs are designed fairly, and to tweak units to ensure exciting battles between players. We’re thrilled to have him on board to help make Age of Empires Online an amazing game!
I am sure many members wills be thrilled with his return. Apparently, MrMilo has already been pitched against ZutaZuta in a game of Age of Empires, although it is not known which of these pro players came out on top! Join the the discussion on AgeComm! http://forum.agecommunity.com/forums/thread/931031.aspx
Aside from Age of Empires there has been a whole hive of activity going on with Orcs Must Die with the announcement of further genius and menacing Orc traps! First up we have the “Steam Trap”. This is something that can be placed on the floor and used to shoot Orcs upwards into the air. Orcs take damage from the fall back down to the ground, but flying Orcs does bring extra Orc busting ideas – project an Orc into the air and they are in prime position to be dealt with by the War Mage’s crossbow.
Another trap that has been announced is the “Pounder” and much like it sounds involves alot of pain for the Orcs. These traps can be placed on ceilings and walls where they will cause some serious damage to an Orcs head! Headaches galore, no doubt. Devious readers may have discovered that both the Steam Trap and the Pounder could be used together, how about pushing Orcs up into the air and then pounding them across the map? Sounds good doesn’t it – the bots at Robot have the idea check out the below video at 23 seconds in and you’ll see the combined Steam and Pounder devastation!
Finally, a quick word about Zynga – the huge social gaming company which has acquired both Bonfire Studios and NewToy. Zynga has recently been offering stock as the company is growing greatly in size and profits. Understandably so with the huge boom in social gaming and the acquisition of some excellent talent, including iconic Ensembler Bruce Shelley. In the news article it is also discussed how successful the NewToy take over has been.
The biggest acquisition, Newtoy, had itself formed back in 2008, with its two founding brothers Paul and David Bettner having quietly released a casual iPhone title – Chess With Friends – under the group’s name.
Zynga said in financial documents that its mobile audience has soared since November 2010 acquisition of Newtoy. Under Zynga, Newtoy was able to double the daily active users for Words With Friends in the first four months after the acquisition.
Its great to hear how NewToy has helped Zynga greatly improve their mobile market presence. The extra investment Zynga has been able to give to the NewToy team has doubled the active users for Words with Friends which is fantastic news for the studio. Congratulations are in order for the NewToy, or rather, Zynga with Friends team!

Age of Empires Online beta draws to a close, plus new Orcs Must Die previews and wins for Robot at RTS-Guru
Updates today on two anticipated games coming out in the next few months thanks to the handy work of the bots at Robot Entertainment. Its been a long time since Ensemble closed in 2009 and in the coming months we are going to see the release of two major PC games developed by Robot which have been eagerly awaited since the studios original formation. First of all, Age of Empires Online is nearer completion as today Microsoft has announced that the beta period is closing on July 1st. After this period Microsoft and Gas Powered Games are pushing ahead trying to get the game ready for launch on August 16th. It’s been great fun playing the beta which has been supported by an excellent online community. A huge amount of progress has been made since the first closed beta build became available. Although, there were some things the community didn’t agree on, on the whole there have been improvements and adjustments made along the way thanks to community feedback. The team at Robot, Gas Powered and Microsoft have regularly engaged the community and took feedback seriously.
I am very excited to see the AOE-O community grow further as the game launches August 16th. AOE-O is definitely going to be the most unique game in the franchise, especially for fans of the series. There are a number of things missing such as custom PvP, Skirmishes and Scenario Editor amongst others, but these are shadowed by the huge amount of new content. Fans who enjoyed the scenarios will be right at home with the heavy focus being placed on single player quests with the game. Although perhaps the story lines are not as detailed this time round there is a huge amount of content and variety with different types of quests. With a large amount of content being given away free this could be an excellent way to increase the exposure of the already successful Age of Empires series. The future is very bright for Age Online, with post release content already planned this game should keep Age fans busy for years to come.
Read and discuss the closed beta announcement here.
More Orcs previews!
Moving onto Game 2.0 from Robot Entertainment. Community Manager Justin Korthof has been busy talking to a whole host of video game websites about Orcs Must Die. I hope you’ve been keeping watch of the @RobotEnt twitter feed! One of the interviews recently which has been very informative has been with Splitkick who interviews both Justin and David Kubalak, Art Director at Robot Entertainment. The interview helps clarify a few things people might have been wondering about the game. Firstly, although lots of community content is planned for the game both pre and post launch, there wont be any mod tools for the game. Unfortunately, there wont be any custom maps, weapons or other mods. As we have been told before, single player is the core focus of the upcoming release for Orcs, but there is possibility for extensions to the game in the future.
Orcs Must Die! has been a single player experience since the beginning. We decided early on to focus on building a high-quality single-player experience.
Some information is also given about the game play. The War Mage will be the only playable character in the game does have a story based campaign featuring the mage. Players start the game with as you might expect, a limited number of defences, spells and weapons. Players gain additional defences each time a fortress is completed.
There is a new defense unlocked each time a player successfully defends a fortress. We have settle on the final number of fortresses just yet, but there will be at least 20 in the final game.
A final point drawn from the interview is a good question asked about how Orcs will differentiate itself from the many other Tower Defence based games cropping up at the moment. The answer being that Orcs will have intensive, fast and action packed gameplay. From my hands on experience and seeing some of the preview videos recently Orcs does feel like a very fast paced game. There is a good sense of adrenaline rush when things start to get a little hairy with mountains of Orcs coming through the castle door. Players also have a wealth of different ways to kill Orcs including a number of different play styles – whether you prefer a magic based approach, hand to hand combat, or strategic defence placement there is a play style suitable for any player with the extra variety by swapping and changing techniques from time to time. One fortress can be played totally different ways depending on a players combination of spells and weapons. Players should feel alot less restricted playing Orcs than perhaps some competing games.
Check out the full interview with Splitkick on the link below which includes some more discussion on the art style for OMD:

Wins for Robot at the RTS-Guru E3 awards
RTS-Guru a website which focuses on strategy games has put together their own E3 awards list based on the best games they experienced at E3. Each award is split into categories and two titles from Robot Entertainment made the list. The categories in question are Age of Empires Online which won “Best Visuals” and Orcs Must Die winning “Best Combat”. Its great to see the bots handy work being highlighted at RTS-Guru! The team at RTS-Guru were particularly impressed with the blend of fast based action combined with strategic tower defense game play.
For Age of Empires Online the level of detail with the art style was praised and how such style is likely to draw in a diverse crowd of players. This award is no doubt pleasing for all the hard work the art bots spent on the project before handing off to Gas Powered Games.
Check at the RTS-Guru awards article here: http://www.rtsguru.com/features/127/The-Best-of-E3-2011-Awards.html
With numerous articles and press reports appearing for both Age Online and Orcs Must Die lately it is great to see both games receiving excellent press reviews and critic appeal. This is no doubt down to the excellent pedigree of developers at Robot Entertainment many who are from Ensemble Studios. Its great to see these people still making great games!

Zynga with Friends releases “Hanging with Friends”

Zynga’s “With Friends” studio, who used to be known as NewToy have just announced their latest game to hit the iOS market – “Hanging with Friends”. Taking the hugely popular “With Friends” series further, this new game is based around the traditional Hang Man game. One player is tasked with choosing a word while the other player has to guess the word by guessing which letters match the word. The player guessing only has a limited amount of guesses before the game is over and normally that player is hanged when the game is over. That’s not necessarily very positive so Zynga have brightened up the concept and made it feel a bit more positive – say hello to pretty colourful graphics!
Instead of gloom and doom its balloons and lava! Players literally “hang” with from balloons as they guess words. Take a look at the full Zynga blog post below fully detailing the game along with some screenshots. The game is available free for iOS devices. No word on an Android version or any other mobile OS yet sadly. The game can be downloaded from the Apple App Store on the link below. If you enjoyed Words with Friends you should certainly like playing this – give it a whirl!
Zynga’s release announcement blog post
We’re thrilled to announce our newest game: Hanging With Friends, a new twist on the classic game of hangman. And it’s !
In Hanging With Friends, we invite you to challenge your friends to a battle of wits by creating and guessing words to stump, amuse or impress each other. Like hangman, you only get so many guesses before you strike out, but unlike hangman, we’ve replaced the doom and gloom of the gallows with colorful balloons suspending you high in the air with a lovely view of…well, a pit of lava.
But who doesn’t want a little danger injected into their standard word games? Speaking of which, if you’ve enjoyed Words With Friends, we think you’ll love Hanging With Friends. You’ll notice a similar layout from the beginning: same look and feel, matching games list and the good old yellow tiles. You’ll get a random set of letters to create your moves. You can chat with friends in the game, get push notifications when it’s your turn and have up to 20 simultaneous games. You can even use the same user name you have for Words or Chess With Friends.
Also like those games, there’s a surprising amount of depth to be found in the game play.
For example, we took the points system of Words With Friends and added it in with a twist. Now points earn you coins, which you can use to buy lifelines to give you hints on those tough to guess words (say, arcane 14th century English words your friend played by submitting nonsense until something went through). We also show an instant replay of your friends’ guessing attempts to give you a glimpse into their playing strategy. And the number of strikes allowed for each word depend on the size of the word, so if you spell a longer word, your friend will have fewer attempts to guess it. Size does matter.
So there’s as much thinking involved as you want there to be. You can sweat over every letter guess and rack your brain for hours coming up with brilliant words, or just hang around and enjoy the scenery.
Until, that is, you lose your balloons and plunge to your death in the lava pit of dooooom!
Hanging With Friends is on the for play on the iPhone and iPod touch. Also check out .

Machinima & Turtle Beach interviews Ian Fischer on Orcs Must Die!
All the excitement is buzzing at E3, we’ve heard lots of exciting new games from the big guns – Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo and now its time to check out how the Ex Ensemble folks are doing at the Robot booth! A bunch of people have swung by to do interviews with the bots. Earlier today (UK time that is!) Turtle Beach featured Orcs Must Die on their live stream and later on Machinima swung by both interviewing design director Ian Fischer. The interviews re-affirm the direction of OMD, its an action strategy game allowing players to pick and choose the traps and weapons they want and then build up the best defence they can against the army of Orcs. The game is not to be taken too seriously – there’s a whole bunch of humor and fun with gameplay. Infact, if you submitted your Orcs one-liners last month you may well be apart of that comedy process! One of the new things to be announced from both these interviews was that Robot plans to launch the game on PC and XBLA first. PSN users may have to wait a little longer. The game is still on schedule for this Summer so stay tuned for some Orc based slashing this Summer on PC and XBLA!
Check out both of these interviews on the link below and stay tuned for more!

Windstorm Studios announces: Atomic City Adventures – the Case of the Black Dragon

In amongst all the excitement of E3 news today, a small studio in Texas also announces something we’ve been eagerly awaiting the past few days. Windstorm Studios after its four day preview now reveals to the world “Atomic City Adventures – the Case of the Black Dragon”! Not only do we have a title announcement we also have a trailer and a bunch of screenshots. So lets jump straight in and see what Windstorm has been working on the past few years. Lets start with the trailer reveal.. and get ready for some retro music!
As can be seen the game play is just how Dusty at Windstorm promised from the beginning – lots of fun flying cars! In the trailer we can clearly see VSF officer Pam Rodgers taking control of a number of vehicles as she goes about policing the city. We can also see differences between flying high in the sky and hovering over roads where we can also see some the classic car models as previously promised. The retro soundtrack and character design combined 1950’s art style set in futuristic times. I have said this before and i’ll say it again.. there is something about this project which reminds me so much of The Jetsons!
The trailer shows combat taking place from vehicles. However foot based missions are also on the cards according to the announcement. By the looks of things the message of the trailer shows players will be taking up the role as Pam Rodgers as she undertakes missions to clean up Atomic City. The title of the game is appended with “The case of the black dragon”, this suggests there is one big overall mission for Pam to accomplish which will be a key focus of the game. Perhaps the “black dragon” is the name of a certain individual or group that Pam has to track down in Atomic City, or perhaps its something completely different – get your detective hats on folks! Lots of futuristic weapons are on the table including lasers, blaster and missile launchers. Also expect a whole bunch of vehicles for players to pilot!
Along with the awesome retro/futuristic combination trailer we also have a whole bunch of screenshots so you can see more of the world up in detail. Take a look at some of these!
To round things off below is the official press release from Windstorm Studios detailing all the announcement facts. One particularly noteworthy item is the release date time frame – Dusty is on course to bring this game out this Summer! That’s right.. its only a few months or even weeks away now! I very much look forward to jumping in this retro / futuristic world. The game will be released digitally for Windows Vista / 7. There’s no word of XP support and no indication of how the game will digitally distributed or if a publisher is on board. However, I expect the game will be self published by Windstorm and will probably be on the Steam platform if not others. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on this game as it gets closer to launch this Summer! Check out the full press release below:

Final day of the Windstorm Studios teasers – Meet Pam Rodgers
It looks like my guess that players will be taking up the role of Hank McKenner in the upcoming Windstorm Studios title was close, but not close enough! It turns out that Hank is infact the former mentor of Ex ACPD Officer, Pam Rodgers. She originally joined ACPD years ago but she quit the force having been outraged at all the corruption and wrong goings on deep in the heart of the ACPD. After just three years on the force she quit for moral reasons. Now with Hank heading up the new Vehicular Strike Force agency that has been setup in Atomic City he has invited her back to assist the VSF with their city wide crackdown. Promising to be different than the ACDP with moral values Pam can strike back against criminals and the wrong-doers of the ACPD. It looks like players will be taking up the role of Pam Rodgers as she helps clean up the city under Hank’s leadership. That is of course, unless I am wrong again!
See what you think take a look at teaser number 4 below. I have also included the previous teasers too as a reminder. Tomorrow will be the day of the big announcement, so be sure to follow us on Twitter @remember_es. News spreads faster on Twitter than I can post on here!
