Delving into Castleville – new trailer and interview with Kotaku

Earlier this week Zynga Dallas published the first trailer for their upcoming Facebook game adventure “Castleville”. The game follows Zynga’s existing “ville” series of games such as Farmville, Frontierville and Cityville. Looking at the below trailer it can clearly be seen the game will be taking forward similar game mechanics ans art style of previous games in the series. Lets take a look at that trailer now:
Ok, so aside from the amusing video there isn’t much gameplay footage there until a sneak peak at the end. However from what we can see it certainly looks like very familiar territory with striking similarity to previous games in the “ville” series. So what do we have here? Well, Castleville is going to be Zynga’s biggest “ville” game yet. After all with Ex Ensemble guys behind the project that is to be expected! Zynga Dallas’ Creative Director, Bill Jackson took part in an interview with Kotaku which helps explain everything.
Firstly, Bill makes note that while the game may have a frilly Zynga like art style, the game will have a whole lot of depth inspired by some of the depth of an Age of Empires title. The goal of the game is for the player to build up their own unique kingdom. In order to build your kingdom you’ll need resources so you’ll need to create things like farms to generate those resources. Players can also embark on quests in order to get further resources and increase the kingdoms experience level. This is starting to sound a little bit like Age of Empires Online but in Facebook form.
You’ll also explore a vast game board that initially looks mostly like a forest shrouded in mist. The game board is bigger than that of FarmVille or CityVille, Jackson told me, and it will be full of new characters and quests to discover.
The game even seems to sport the “Fog of War” making the similarity between Castleville and Age of Empires gameplay mechanics quite prominent. This isn’t a bad thing of course, the more depth the Zynga Dallas team can bring to the game the better – and they certainly have the experience and track record to do so. Overall it sounds like Castleville will be a big step forward in terms of depth for Facebook games and this game will no doubt be a very exciting release for fans of social gaming on Facebook. It’s great to see the talent at Zynga Dallas pushing the boundaries with this title.
Payment for the game will take the form of allowing players to “buy” extra energy or resources. Alternatively players can wait for a few hours and continue playing when their energy is replenished. Zynga fans will know the drill here. It’s not a particular payment method I like but its the standard way for most social games on Facebook these days.
More good news is that legendary ex Ensemble music composer Stephen Rippy will be providing players with over 15 minutes of music. In typical Stephen Rippy fashion this music is composed with no less than a 75-piece orchestra and choir.
The release date for Castleville is currently un-announced. With the game being free to pick up and play be sure to check it out on release. Stand by for further updates in the coming weeks as we find out more information about Castleville! Meanwhile I would recommend checking out the full Kotaku article below which can tell you heaps more about the game and also includes some interesting screenshots:
New DLC upcoming for Orcs Must Die on Steam!
How is everyone’s Orc slaying going, 5-skulled all the missions? Killed over 30,000 Orcs? Dared to brave nightmare mode? Well, no matter where you are on your quest, things are set to get even more interesting with the announcement of two DLC packs for OMD on Steam. Details of the first DLC pack include two exciting new traps and two exciting new magic powers – so lets check them out!
As video is always much better at describing things than words, check out Robot Entertainment’s brand new video detailing all of the goodies in DLC pack #1 for Steam below!
The first DLC pack will be titled “Artifacts of Power” and will be available on Steam come October 25th. That’s only a few days away folks! As a mini DLC package the price is also kept bite size too, costing just $2.49 – you can’t say no to that!
But but but.. what about Xbox? This DLC package is currently for Steam players. However, there is DLC for Xbox in the pipeline. The DLC pack announced today is part 1 of a two part series. Generally DLC packs on Xbox Live are slightly bigger than bitesize chunks. I predict we will see both DLC pack 1 and 2 which launch on Steam soon to make their way to Xbox as part of one DLC pack roll up. That’s my guess of course, Robot may well have something else up their sleeves!
Rest assured though loyal Xbox Orc slayers – there will be DLC coming, it is in the pipeline. This is not the work of platform favouritism either, it just so happens that there are alot of hoops to go through to get DLC on Xbox Live, with time-scales outside of Robot’s control. So sit tight for now and Xbox players will no doubt see their DLC pack soon.
Persian civilisation launches for Age of Empires Online today!
Great news for Age of Empires Online fans – Microsoft Studios and Gas Powered Games are today pushing out the brand new civilisations, the Persians! The Persians will be the first “pro” civilisation. This means players start straight away at level 20 allowing players to immediately tech up and start with gear already attached. Players will be able jump straight into the action with Persia with no worries about having to trudge through the early levels for experienced players. This does come at a cost though as there is no story driving campaign quests with the Persians. Microsoft Studios clarified on the reasons for this as follows:
Persia won’t have a story campaign, since our goal was to get players access to high level content quickly. We’d love to create some Persian story content later, since that culture has an amazing history, but for this launch, we wanted to focus on a way to accelerate advanced players into gameplay.
This seems quite reasonable considering the bran new civilisation has appeared after only just a few months of the original release date of Age Online. It’s a package tailored for the more experienced players and its great to see the developers taking steps to please all types of players be they new or experienced.
Persia comes with a whole bunch of exciting unique units which include:
o The Immortal, effective against infantry at short range but can also shoot arrows from afar.
o The Sparabara, a shielded infantry unit capable of withstanding ranged weaponry.
o The War Wagon, an impressive war machine able to destroy enemies with volleys of arrows.
The units look excellent and definitely add alot of variation in comparison to the Greeks and Egyptians. I have my eye on the War Wagon which looks like it will be very useful as a fast-moving siege weapon. Baracade your castles!
War Wagons are looking pretty interesting!
Besides some interesting new units the Persians also bring some new play styles to the table. A new unique building called the Aid tent can be built by upgrading storehouses. This will allow nearby units to be healed automatically. Sounds like a great way to protect villagers after an attack. Also on offer are some special unique techs from another exclusive building the War Academy. This is perhaps one of the most interesting unique features, the war academy, this allows players to change play style upgrades on demand. For instance a player could activate the “Rigorous training” upgrade which allows units to train 30% faster which can be extremely useful when under attack. However, these upgrades do come at a cost as well. For instance the rigorous training upgrade while it increases train time by 30% it increases the cost of each unit by 15%. This allows players to pick their poison so to speak.
The War Academy adds another layer of strategic choices.
Overall the addition of the Persian civilisation to Age of Empires Online looks exciting. The units and upgrades are suitably different to add a new mix of game play and the civilisation should bode well with those players who like to jump straight into the action at Level 20. Whilst the lack of story-driven campaign is slightly disappointing the speedy turn around time and interesting unique features of the civilisation should result in happy Age of Empire-rs!
Players can play the demo of the Persian Civilisation by checking out the new region in-game. Just speak to your City Ambassador to be shown the way! The purchase price for the Persian Civilisation is offered at the special introductory price of 640 points, rising to 1280 points after the limited promotion ends. So if you like what you see, now is the perfect time to visit your empire bazaar and make a purchase! Enjoy!
Zynga Dallas announces Castleville
Things have been quiet for the Zynga Dallas crew who used to be known as Bonfire Studios. Infact, we haven’t heard anything from them since they were acquired by Zynga this time last year. It was a pleasant surprise to see Zynga announce the studio had been working on an exciting massively multiplayer social game called “Castleville”. The press release reads as follows:
Created by Zynga Dallas, CastleVille is the next game in Zynga’s “Ville” franchise which includes FarmVille, FrontierVille, and CityVille. CastleVille is set in a medieval world, with an engaging story, a touch of fantasy and memorable, playful characters. A true manifestation of Zynga’s social magic, the game improves upon the best social and emotional elements from each of the “Ville” games that came before it.In CastleVille players will be able build and manage the kingdom of their dreams, explore the rich world and setting, and share it with their friends. Friends can help each other craft rare items, trade in the markets, and fight back the beasties that lurk just outside the castle walls. CastleVille raises the bar on the production value of the “Ville” brand, with epic storytelling, highly detailed art and animation, and a completely original musical score that was recorded with a 75-piece orchestra and full choir. CastleVille is coming soon to Facebook.
The team at Zynga Dallas have experience in this sector – taking their knowledge of the strategy genre from their roots at Ensemble from games like Age and Halo Wars and also using knowledge from previous Bonfire releases like the social game “We Farm” for iPhone. CastleVille is a good coming together of talent at the studio. The game itself will launch on Facebook and will allow players to create their very own kingdom to share with friends. In short, its going to be alot like Farmville, but instead of farms, its going to be castles and kingdoms. There is a whole lot more to it of course, luckily Creative Director of Zynga Dallas took some time out to talk to Gamasutra about the game in an interview. When asked about the game Bill Jackson responded:
FarmVille is about self-expression, building the farm of your dreams and sharing it. In CastleVille, I’m building the kingdom of my dreams, which is awesome. Then you look at something like FrontierVille, which is about strong narrative storytelling, and it brought that to the franchise.
We have strong narrative storytelling, and we also allow you to unlock that story in new ways that allow you to have more control over how the story unfolds. When you look at CityVille, it really brought a level of simulation, and certainly upped the amount of social interaction with franchises, and crewing, and these types of mechanics.
Now, with CastleVille, we incorporate all of those things, but ours is more personal. It’s about the characters. For instance, is this character happy? Can you make them happier? How do you progress in your relationship with this character, and with your friends.
And then we look at CastleVille itself, and this game is about exploration. The world is not just space that you’re going to expand out to – it has mysteries in it. There are things to uncover, and when you uncover them, that helps inform everything else I just talked about: how you can be social, what the story will be, and ultimately, how you can express yourself.
Its great to see the studio pushing the boundaries, taking forward a tried and tested formula and making positive improvements to the experience and depth. It will be interesting to see screenshots and video footage of the game in due course. For now I would recommend checking out the below interview at Gamasutra which contains alot of information on the direction Zynga Dallas are looking to take the game:

Now she and the VSF are ready to launch their attack on the robotic AI controlled flying bikes. While this level is mostly about the final showdown between Pam and Kumiko it is important to explore the level as well for those looking to get the highest scores. As Kenny points out If you want extra points make sure that you kill the main villain last.
Completing this level will wrap up your time in Atomic City. Never fear though, Dusty has previously hinted at an additional two levels which we might see arriving in the form of DLC in the future. So stay tuned and we’ll see you again in Atomic City!
Orcs Must Die! XBLA Review
So the date is finally upon us – October 5th the release date of Orcs Must Die! (OMD) on Xbox Live Arcade. I have been playing OMD! over the last few days and have been extremely impressed with the game. OMD is the first original IP game to be launched by Robot Entertainment. For a number of people at the studio who worked previously at Ensemble this is the first game outside of the traditional RTS field. For those people this game is a breath of fresh air allowing for a new type creativity to flourish, and it certainly has done. OMD is a third person action strategy game. The goal of the game is simple – kill Orcs, kill them in any way you can. Players can choose between weapons, traps and magic to do the job. The Orcs must be killed before a certain number reach the rifts at the other end of the level. Otherwise its game over!
Story
Robot have spent some time creating a decent back story to the game. They have even come up with a whole comic book edition to detail the back story which acts as a prequel comic book to the game. There is no slouch on effort here, the digital comic book is brilliantly designed and of a quality of traditional printed comics. The art quality is fantastic and the comic even features exclusive community art as well. The comic describes how for many years in history “rifts” have existed which acted as a primary source of magic for the Mages who used this magic to help solve problems such as summoning rain storms when there was drought. However “ages” ago some stupid explorers decided to foolishly venture into the rifts and cross to the other side. On the other side they found a land destroyed and ravaged. The ugly creates on the other side, the Orcs then began to step through the rift into the world and thats when doom and gloom fell on the world as death and villages burned as the Orcs began to tear up the land.
The Mages travelled to each rift and began to push the Orcs back to their own world. Huge fortresses and castles were then built in the Orcs world to stop them from reaching the rifts and prevent them from entering the world. In order to keep the world safe in the future the Mages were given apprentices and thats where the main character comes in for OMD. The War Mage we play as is the apprentice of one of the elder Mages, unfortunetly though he wasn’t quite the sharpest tool in the shed. However as the armies of Orcs got bigger and bigger the Mages began to fall. The time has come for the War Mage to step up the plate the prepare to defend the fortresses – and thats where you come in.
The story is sound and reasonable for an Xbox Arcade game. The comic book does an awesome job at presenting the prequel and readers should definitely check out the comic before playing the game. Why not take a break out of this review and catch up on the comic now on the link below?
Orcs Must Die! Prequel Comic book
Gameplay
I know what you must be thinking, enough about story and more about the gameplay. Well, I can tell you straight off that OMD is fast, exciting and extremely addicting. At the start of the game you begin with a limited set of traps and weapons, the first few levels are a breeze but they help players get familiar with the controls. Similar to Ensemble’s Halo Wars, Robot has also managed to create a very easy to learn control scheme for the Xbox 360 controller. You’ll be surprised just how easy and fluid it really is. The only slight downside with the control scheme is that you have to cycle through your load out to get to the weapon or trap that you want. On PC players can simply press a number on the keyboard to go to the item they want, but Xbox players need to cycle through. It’s not a major problem, just a slight delay compared to the PC platform. I don’t see how they could have done it any differently though.
With the controls a breeze to pick up, its also super easy to pick up the concept. Yes, I know it says it in the title, but the name of the game is indeed to kill Orcs, the biggest question though is how. As players move past the first four levels or so things start to toughen up very quickly. It was that I first noticed a quite sharp difficulty increase, I suddenly found myself having to think very carefully about which traps I was going to put where. This is where the strategy element comes in. At the beginning of each level players are given their spell book which they can use to select traps and weapons that they think would be best at keeping the Orcs at bay. Depending on the layout of the level will have a huge impact on the effectiveness of a trap/weapon combination. Later on in the game things are spiced up even more with the weavers, these allow players to select certain upgrades which boost health, weapon strength or reduce cooldowns. These upgrades come at a cost of points which could be used to spend on traps. The system provides a whole extra layer of depth which is most welcome and very well thought out.
The number of enemies is also very good – from standard Orcs, to Orcs with cross bows and a whole bunch of other creatures like massive Ogres which can take some serious damage to kill and really makes you think about priorities on the battlefield. The flying creatures are truly a huge pain in the bum – you’ll have to keep your wits about you dealing with both ground based and airborne nasties! Plus there are the Gnoll Hunters which can once again shake up your priorities, these fast paced enemies will target guardian units (like your archers) first. Do you sacrifice your archers to fend off the mob? Or rescue them in hopes they can turn the tide in battle? Choices are plentiful in OMD.
As you start to progress through the levels players will soon start to realist that OMD is fast, exhilarating and most of all extremely fun. Seriously, when playing OMD, you cannot stand still. You’ll constantly be dashing from one end of the map to the other rushing to horde off the Orcs whilst at the same time frantically trying to place down traps in the best locations. Sure, after a few rounds you get a break to place traps how you see fit, but when you acquire points in battle you’ll be looking to plant traps at the same time as holding off against the horde. Be prepared for a huge adrenaline rush for those times when Orcs are getting hairly close to the rift, shuffling through your load out to find the Wind belt to push them back.
There is a ton of action packed fun to find here and the gameplay I’m sure will appeal to a large audience of gamers. Robot have really pulled out all the stops to ensure the game is painless to play and offers a huge amount of exciting on-edge game play. The only pain in the game, is the pain you’ll be unleashing on orcs, ogres and other foul creatures!
Graphics
In terms of eye candy the art style of OMD helps make it enjoyable to play. Although the game play takes place inside a fortress there is a good colour palette and bright colours. Textures and detail on traps are very good. One of the best things about the graphics though are the physics effects when slicing and dicing Orcs. Each trap has its own way of killing each Orc and these extravagant ways are presented with some humorously over the top deaths.
SPLAT! You can’t say that doesn’t look good!
Frame-rates on the XBLA version are super slick and I havent spotted any lag anywhere in the game. There is some odd lag at the Orcs Must Die logo screen right at the beginning – but that’s about it. Robot i’m sure have spent a lot of time ensure the game ran as fluidly on Xbox and indeed the PC version too.
Sound & Music
I love the music. Lets get that out there straight away! As soon as those doors burst open the music really adds to the adrenaline rush to push back the Orcs. There are a number of different tracks which helps to keep things fresh. Sound effects on traps etc are equally as good. The best thing of all is the added humour and voice overs for the Orcs. You may remember back in April 2011 Robot Entertainment reached out to the community to provide some one-liners for the Orcs as they met their doom. This resulted in a number of exciting entries including the winning entry “Don’t crossbow me, bro!” A whole bunch of the community one-liners plus some genius lines from Robot have made their way into the game. I’m definitely pleased with the humours angle Robot are taking with the game.
Any thoughts on a one-liner for the Orcs here?
Multiplayer
Ok, so this really is the only stinger. There is no co-op coming at launch with Orcs Must Die! This is a real shame as Orcs would be a great co-op experience. This is not to say the single player game isn’t awesome, it certainly it is. I think after a few games of playing Orcs single player it wont be long until players start thinking about co-op. The problem with co-op is that adding a whole multi player experience would have resulted in a huge amount of additional development time and we almost certainly wouldn’t be playing Orcs until 2012. So its swings and roundabouts. Robot’s objectives as a studio is to try and get high quality, fun games out of the door more often. When Remember ES went on location to Robot earlier this year the message was that they wanted to do away with those long laborious development cycles like Halo Wars, and move to much more agile development process, shipping smaller games at a faster rate. With Robot committed to new IP this is going to mean lots more exciting original games being pumped out the factory and we might see 2 or perhaps even more games coming out next year. I think this is a fair trade for the missing co-op in Orcs Must Die for now :).
Re-playability & Value
Replayability is always something to important to consider with games – the amount of re-playability is often used to help judge how much value for money a title represents. OMD well be on the Xbox Marketplace for 1200MSP. So lets take a look at what you get with that:
- 24 unique fortresses to defend. Each fortress is totally unique and will need different strategies in terms of trap placement, weapon selection and upgrade selection in order to get the top scores.
- 7 weapons & magic plus 17 unique traps. Again, we are looking at unique traps here each with different cost and effectiveness depending on the environment. There are potentially hundreds of combinations of traps, magic and weapons players could try out on any given level!
- A weapon upgrade system. Strategy goes deeper than just on the battlefield – players can choose to spend experience points on upgrades to their traps. Players gain experience relatively slowly so there is a lot to think about before choosing upgrades.
- A full leader-board system. There may not be multi-player but this hasn’t stopped Robot from crafting a fully featured leader-board system. Compare high scores with your friends and other players in the world and aim for the best.
- Nightmare mode. For those seriously addicted gamers, nightmare mode offers a whole new mode of intense difficulty for those who manage to fly through the medium difficulty settings. Its not over until the Orcs say its over.
Final thoughts
Overall Orcs Must Die makes for a fantastic first original title to come out of the factory at Robot Entertainment. For many of those at Robot who came from Ensemble, Orcs does a great job at taking the strategy genre talent at the studio and combining this with an exciting, fast-paced action game. With a polished art style and fluid game play its easy for many to pick up and play. The game offers an exciting experience right from the get go, there’s no complicated control scheme to try and follow. The game is available at an excellent price point and offers superb value for money with a vast potential for re-playability and certainly room for DLC down the line! As a huge fan of Ex Ensemble and Robot Entertainment I am extremely pleased to award this game 5 Orc skulls out of 5!
But don’t just take my word for it…

A few minor adjustments – Mission #6 Atomic City guide
RadioKenny’s Atomic City Adventures guide has been updated with Mission #6. In this mission Agent Rodgers has to brave the Industrial Complex of Kyoto Industries in order to plant the override protocol in Kyoto’s systems so that the VSF can re-take control of the dangerous weapons. I quite enjoyed this mission which involves quite alot of fighting both air and ground units. As Kenny points out, it’s not a great idea just to go in with all guns blazing, I recommend taking each corner separately and disperse with the flying enemies first. Often you can start to fire on the enemy from a distance allowing you to damage a unit quite significantly before it sees you and starts to attack.
The AI antenna’s on this level are pretty easy to find. Kenny’s map will point you in the right direction for the contraband and weapons collectors! Take a look at the latest guide below and enjoy your gold score!
